Production control systems for Industry 4.0

Manufacturing Execution Systems – also called production control systems – pave the way towards Industry 4.0 and Smart Factory. They take over the automatic planning, control and monitoring of production and collect a whole lot of information in the process.

The machine and operating data collected in this way are a treasure for every company, because they provide information about the degree of machine utilisation, the reject rate and the throughput times of a production order, among other things.

Data measurement in real time

Production processes can be measured in real time. The recorded data then goes from the MES to the Enterprise Resource Planning Program (ERP) and to the process control level. There, targeted measures can be taken on the basis of this information to increase the efficiency of production. This reduces production costs, so that the increased energy and raw material prices can be at least partially compensated.

The continuous data flow between the systems makes it possible to see, for example, which machines still have free capacity, whether an increase in cycle time is possible or what the quality of the end product is.

The hardware plays a decisive role

A decisive role for the successful use of an MES is the careful selection of the hardware.
This means that the housings of the operating units must be precisely matched to the application.

Our panel PCs are based on a modular standard kit which can be adapted to the individual needs of the customer’s production without much effort. At the same time, they are the basis for different manufacturers of MES software and can therefore be used almost everywhere.

Robust and reliable

Operating units for ME systems (MES) are often exposed to adverse environments. High humidity, dust or vibrations are not uncommon in rough everyday industrial life. A failure of the unit can lead to delays in production and thus to high costs. Therefore, robustness and reliability of the operating units play a major role.

Our panel PCs have sturdy housings, high protection classes (IP65 – IP69) and screens with PCAP touch that are insensitive to scratches or liquids. They are therefore ideally equipped for a demanding working environment.

Software

Manufacturing Execution Systems are now running on panel PCs from ROSE in many industries – in food production as well as in the automotive, cosmetics and metalworking industries.

The MES itself can be used in different ways: The programs are either installed directly on the computers or on the server of an external service provider.

The best results can be achieved when software and hardware come from a single source. In the medium term, ROSE is therefore planning to cooperate with an MES provider who can then offer a complete solution consisting of hardware and software.

Software

Mittlerweile laufen in vielen Branchen Manufacturing Execution-Systeme auf Panel PCs von ROSE – in der Lebensmittel-Produktion ebenso wie in der Automobil-, Kosmetik- und metallverarbeitenden Industrie.

Das MES selbst kann auf verschiedene Art und Weise genutzt werden: Die Programme sind entweder direkt auf den Rechnern oder auf dem Server eines externen Dienstleisters installiert. Bei dieser Thin Client-Lösung wird die Software per Web-Browser bedient, sodass der Anwender Rechenleistung spart und sich nicht um Software-Updates kümmern muss.

Ganz egal, welche Variante ein Unternehmen wählt: Durch den Einsatz eines MES kann es die Effizienz seiner Fertigungsprozesse deutlich steigern. Die besten Ergebnisse lassen sich erzielen, wenn Software und Hardware aus einer Hand kommen. Mittelfristig plant ROSE deshalb die Zusammenarbeit mit einem MES-Anbieter, der dann eine Komplettlösung aus Hard- und Software anbieten kann.

Our all-round service for you

However, we not only undertake the individual adaptation of the panel PCs, industrial monitors or industrial box PCs, but also supply them as a complete solution including a support arm system on request. If required, the operating units can be installed directly at your premises.

In addition to the configuration and commissioning of the operating units, our services also include the installation of software provided, the adaptation of the default BIOS or the PCAP touch controller as well as the updating of the firmware.

If, contrary to expectations, a device should be defective, there is also a quick replacement, because ROSE also offers the assembly of a warehouse with customised HMI systems. In the event of a failure, the panel PCs can then be replaced within a few seconds even by unskilled workers via the patent.
