NoVoTronic enclosures from ROSE protect railway electronics against environmental influences

Perspective in regional and local transport

Electronics used in railway applications must cope with especially challenging environmental conditions. Manufacturer AVIrail was looking for a sturdy electronics enclosure for its new real-time rearview mirror system, and found what it was looking for at ROSE Systemtechnik.

AVIrail GmbH, with its headquarters in Austria and Germany, develops and manufactures standardised real-time video surveillance systems for rail vehicles and buses. The products and systems are developed especially for the customer‘s particular area of application. Consequently, enclosures and both hardware and software configuration must be capable of project-specific design in order to provide good integrability in vehicles. Certifications such as EN 50155 (Electronic equipment used on rolling stock) ensure that the products and systems meet the demanding requirements.

For its new RailEye real-time rearview mirror system, which can be used both as a classic rearview mirror system and a door monitoring system, AVIrail was looking for an enclosure manufacturer who can guarantee that the electronics are protected in an environment with demanding requirements. In addition to the high-resolution camera system, the heart of the system is the evaluation electronics which are integrated directly in the rail vehicle.

Enclosure solution with high level of shock and vibration resistance

The so-called video link makes possible intelligent processing of the vehicle‘s signals (e.g. door release, direction of travel, speed) in order to change the display on the monitor automatically and in the required way. This allows the locomotive driver to see the appropriate information in the form of a full screen or as a split or quad screen. The overall system complies with the SIL-1 standard for safety-critical applications and the fire-protection guidelines for rail vehicles.

The important factor for customers was that the enclosure solution includes a high level of shock and vibration resistance and high EMC protection. Because of the high-performance electronics, the enclosure must be able to have a power loss of 5W at an ambient temperature of -20°C to + 85°C. The demanding requirements made of the safety-related fields of use mean that the system must be certified according to standards EN 50155 (Electronic equipment used on rolling stock), EN 50121-3-2 (Electromagnetic compatibility), EN 61373 (Vibration and shock testing) and EN 45545 (Fire protection) and CE. All part-components must comply with these standards.

With the NoVoTronic enclosure series, ROSE Systemtechnik is offering its customers a reliable product which satisfies all the listed requirements. The high-quality aluminium alloy also allows the enclosures to be used in harsh environments. The products in the NoVoTronic series comply with the shock and vibration test without any problems. In addition, the cast aluminium lids with a Neoprene seal guarantee IP 65 protection acc. to EN 60529 and an operating temperature range from -40 to +90 °C, in which the requirement of 85 °C is even exceeded. Integrated guide grooves in the enclosure provide easy insertion of PCBs. External screw channels allow the interior to remain burr-free and the sensitive electronics to be protected.

NoVoTronic enclosures with a corporate design

With little processing time, ROSE offers its customers an EMC-compliant version of the enclosure. The product range consists of five profile widths from 80 to 200 mm (internal dimension) and in each case three different lengths in the standard range of products. The profile technology allows production of a large number of additional sizes to meet the customer‘s individual requirements. Thanks to its modern design and classic RAL 9005 colour, the NoVoTronic enclosure is especially suitable for use in visible areas.

Implementing an individual corporate identity concept is not a problem for ROSE: our enclosure experts can coat both enclosures and design insert strips with a certified powder in accordance with EN 45545 (fire protection standard) in all available RAL shades. A comprehensive programme of accessories, including a wall holder or connecting elements, completes the NoVoTronic series product portfolio.
